History
Guillaune was born in the Sharlayan colony on the continent of Eorzea, and was drawn very early to thaumaturgy. The destructive power inherent in that study seemed suited to the fires in his soul -- far more so than the healing practiced by his sister Moinelle, for despite his best efforts he had no aptitude in that direction at all. It was a limitation he tried to accept with grace, however, noting that each person has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it doesn't do to try force one's spirit in a direction to which it is unsuited. As soon as they were permitted, Guillaune and his sister left Sharlayan to pursue what they called "independent study," or more accurately, the one sought the teachings of the Thaumaturges Guild in Ul'dah, while the other wished to learn from the Conjurers of Gridania. Later, the two would rejoin and continue the more "practical" aspects of their magical training as wandering adventurers. In their travels, they came across a merchant caravan that had been attacked by bandits. Moinelle and Guillaune drove off the bandits, but it was too late for almost all in the caravan. The lone exception was a small child, hidden by her parents at the start of the attack. Because of her young age, and the emotional trauma she'd suffered, the child couldn't tell them anything about her family, where she'd come from, or even her own name. Lacking any clues to help them restore her to her home, the Elezen adventurers chose to adopt her instead, and took turns caring for her, one staying in camp or a city while the other took on the more dangerous of the adventuring jobs on offer.Years passed, and the child, who they named "Cerisanthe," grew and shared their love of both adventuring and magic -- all kinds of magic, not just the thaumaturgy, conjury, and astrology her guardians preferred. Moinelle and Guillaune taught her all they knew, and found other teachers when she showed interest in areas they hadn't studied, like music and archery. Soon they started taking her on their adventuring jobs with them, despite her young age. But their little trio was separated when the Sharlayan city-state chose to recall its colonists and abandon the colony. Moinelle and Guillaune felt they had to return home with the others, at least to help their parents and grandparents with the move, but they didn't want to force the choice on their protégée, as each privately believed she would find life in Sharlayan restricting as well as unfamiliar. After much thought, and the reassurance that the older two intended it merely as a temporary separation and planned to come back to Eorzea as soon as they could, Cerisanthe agreed to stay in Gridania and practice what she'd learned among the Conjurers and Wood Wailers.Paperwork and bureaucracy being what it is, in the end Guillaune lost patience with all the fuss; he and Moinelle gave up on trying to obtain permission and just slipped aboard the next available ship back to Eorzea. After a long visit with Cerisanthe, they decided to part ways once more. Moinelle and Cerisanthe wanted to continue studying within the cities, but Guillaune had had enough of being stationary and wanted to return to the wandering adventurer's life. The Gridanian chapter of the Adventurers Guild was quite helpful in locating both jobs and comrades, and before long, he'd become part of a regular party. They were his friends as well as his companions. One in particular was especially dear to him, the conjurer K'mirriem, and she felt the same about him.All changed when the Garlean Empire began its invasion of Eorzea, however. Guillaune's party joined the forces seeking to stop them at Carteneau, and accounted quite well for themselves until the Garleans's efforts to bring down Dalamud caused the emergence of the elder primal Bahamut. There was naught to be done but flee as best they could, but when the dust and ash settled, Guillaune found himself alone. Neither K'mirriem nor any other of his friends had survived Bahamut's fury. Heartbroken, he resolved not to join another group, and instead wandered alone, taking such jobs as he was assigned, and retreating to his solo studies in between. His sister and foster-sister worried for him, but could do little more than provide a welcoming home on those rare occasions when he sought them out.Everything has its season, however, and with the passing of the years, he found his sorrow easing. And as his heart healed, he began to feel lonely instead of merely alone. Still hesitant to join a new group of strangers, he instead traveled with his sister or foster-sister on their adventures, regaining more and more of his former lightheartedness along the way but still uncertain which path to choose for himself. Finally he asked his sister's advice. "Why not meet my friends?" she asked, glad to find him interested. And so he did, tracking them down in this place and that to arrange for "chance" encounters.
